Counselling Services

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through your personal problems with a counsellor, also known as ‘talk-based therapy’. A counsellor will help you to address your problems in a positive way, help clarify issues, and help to identify ways to improve your situation and increase self-awareness. Counselling provides confidential support, which means that everything you discuss with the counsellor is private and confidential between you and the counsellor.

Counselling services can assist with personal issues regarding:

  • Grief and loss
  • Communication and relationships issues
  • Work and career issues
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Life transitionsParenting
  • Abuse
  • Trauma
  • Self-esteem

Counselling usually refers to short-term treatment for a particular problem, such as difficulties in a marriage. Psychotherapy usually refers to longer-term treatment for complex issues that are having a negative effect on a person’s life. There can be a lot of overlap between the two approaches, depending on the needs of the person.

Psychotherapy Services | Center For Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy services differ from usual counselling services. Psychotherapy deals with important personality characteristics and identifies unhealthy thought and behaviour patterns, involves a collaboration and treatment plan made between a patient and psychologist to alter an individual’s thought patterns and behaviours.

As it is often difficult to change behaviour, psychotherapy typically involves the assignment of homework tasks which involve practicing methods discussed during psychotherapy sessions. Through regular practice between psychotherapy sessions, the patient will consolidate the progress made, which will help maintain the ideal behaviour habits and thought patterns discussed after therapy has been completed.

Psychotherapy services can assist those who experience feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, or other negative emotions for a long period of time. It can also be used as part of pain management to help those who are suffering from a chronic illness that is interfering with their emotional and/or physical wellbeing. Others, however, may seek psychotherapy services to assist with the navigation of life events or work matters.

ADHD Treatment, Counselling, Psychotherapy

Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder (ADHD) is recognised as a mental health condition which can cause inattentiveness and/or hyperactive impulsivity and can often result in impaired social and academic functioning. ADHD is often first noticed in children when they fail to learn at school. ADHD affects approximately 7% of the population and approximately 2 to 4 times more girls. What causes ADHD is not clear but genetic, environmental, neurobiological, and demographic factors have all been identified as possible contributors.

At HD Psychology we work with clients with ADHD to improve time management and organisational skills, set goals, in completing projects, and to develop strategies to deal with specific challenges. In doing so, it is important to determine and use individual strengths, while understanding reasonable expectations through developing accurate self-awareness.

Those with ADHD often do not achieve the same academic and career outcomes as the general population. The proportion of children initially diagnosed with ADHD symptoms drops by 50% over three years regardless of the type of treatment used. Similar results were also found when no treatment is provided. ADHD persists into adulthood in about 30% to 50% of cases. Those affected are likely to develop coping mechanisms as they mature, thus compensating for their previous symptoms.

Behavioural symptoms often include:

  • being exclusively active (such as constant fidgeting)
  • impulsivity (such as intarupting others
  • inattentiveness
  • non-compliance

Managing ADHD symptoms usually involves some combination of medication, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Lifestyle changes. Accurate diagnosis is complex and specialist assessments are needed to determine if a child has ADHD, and for that matter if an adult has ADHD.

Medication is only recommended for severe symptoms and for those with moderate symptoms who do not respond to psychotherapeutic alternatives.

ADHD treatment focuses on how the disorder affects behaviour and learning how to improve these behaviours. This involves assessing how a child’s behaviour impacts on the family and on interactions and learning at school. A plan is then developed to assist parents and teachers to manage and modify the child’s behaviour in positive ways.

If you believe that you suffer from the above symptoms, we can provide a detailed assessment and recommendations.

Relationship Counselling | Family Counselling Sydney

Relationships are central to psychological health. Supportive relationships with friends, family, or partners are directly related to an increase in psychological wellbeing, and the reduction of stress, anxiety, and depression. However, by their nature, relationships can be complicated, and building healthy and sustainable relationships can be equally so, thus it is not surprising that relationship counselling is one of the most common services provided by psychologists.

Difficulties in relationships with partners or spouses, children, family, colleagues, employers, or friends are fairly common. A psychologist can help you to identify and mediate issues such as miscommunication, repetitive conflict, beginning relationships, dating, relationship breakdown, or difficulty in either forming or maintaining good relationships. Sessions can be undertaken on an individual, couple, family, or group basis.

Couple counselling is available for heterosexual, same sex couples, married or defacto, and new or well-established relationships.

Relationship counselling can help you, either individually, or as a couple or family, to work out the causes of the problems in your relationships. It can be difficult on your own to see clearly the problems in your relationships, and to work out solutions and mediate the conflict that may be occurring. Relationship counselling provides a supportive and objective environment in which you are able to constructively explore the causes of relationship problems.

Together with a psychologist, relationship counselling provides you with insight, knowledge, skills, and approaches that enable you to change unhelpful relationship patterns, respond productively to relationship difficulties, and ultimately build healthier and more satisfying bonds.

Relationships, Family Counselling Sydney

At times, family relationships can become complicated, and can sometimes break down into open hostility between parents, parents and children, or siblings. These can be difficult times, and it can be important to seek out a qualified psychologist to act as a mediator, and enable open communication between people experiencing relationship difficulties. Family counselling is beneficial as it helps families to work out their differences, and see each other’s point of view from a different perspective.

Family therapy helps family members find more constructive ways to organise, function, interact, get along, help, and support each other. Family therapy can also cover a wide range of other situations which could be impacting on family relationships, such as behavioural issues, eating disorders, drug or alcohol abuse, mental health issues, and other difficulties.

Family therapy is also able to address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family, such as major life transitions, financial hardship, divorce, or the death of a loved one.

It can be highly important to address a therapist in relation to these matters, as they can often be delicate to handle, and have a significant outcome.

Relationships, Marriage Counselling

Marriage counselling is a subset of couples counselling, as married people are in a more serious commitment to each other, and the stakes are higher.

Marriage counselling can often involve children and/or step-children, and as married couples have typically been married for longer, the issues in the marriage may be more entrenched and complex. If all else fails, it can be important to seek out our psychologists as a consultant, as a registered psychologist with experience in the field of dealing with relationships can provide insight, and act as a mediator to resolve disputes, as well as enable each person to understand the perspective of the other.

Relationships, Couples Counselling

Maintaining a healthy and pleasurable relationship is much more difficult when there is ongoing conflict that leaves you feeling angry, disappointed, frustrated or hurt.

All relationships face difficulties, and most are resolved over time. However, when the problems become entrenched and seem impossible to reconcile, it is important to seek professional help. Obviously, partners will try to deal with relationship issues themselves, but when problems continue to occur it becomes clear that professional help is needed. It is far better to resolve problems than to dissolve the relationship altogether.

Ideally, both partners would agree that assistance is required in order to gain a new and objective perspective on their relationship issues, and to assist in mediation of these issues. If, however, your partner is reluctant or unwilling to seek help, then it can be very helpful for you to seek help first.

It is important that you seek help from someone who is trained and experienced in working with relationships.

Executive and Life coaching

We often think of psychologists as someone you see when you have a problem. However, did you know that a lot of successful executives, Olympic athletes, actors, musicians, and many other people seek the assistance of psychologists to help them identify and achieve their goals, rather than wait until they are experiencing psychological hardship?

Psychologists can help you identify what is important to you. What are your important life and/or career goals? What barriers do you need to overcome to achieve these goals? We can help you realise how to accept and work within your limitations, as well as how to identify and work with your strengths, and how to develop happiness and build resilience to failures.  See: http://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/docs/Positivepsychology.pdf

Positive CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) joins with Positive Psychology and Solution Focused Brief Therapy to focus on what is right rather than wrong, and what is working rather than what is not working.
