Social Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety, Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety Disorder is characterised by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. It involves a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched, judged, embarrassed, or humiliated by one’s own actions. This fear can directly interfere with work, school, or other social interactions. Social anxiety is often associated with feelings of loneliness, low self-esteem, and/or depression, and it can also lead to alienation.

Social anxiety can encompass a wide range of situations or be specifically related to one type of scenario, such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal settings, eating or drinking in front of others, or simply being around other people. Physical symptoms often accompany social anxiety and provide evidence of the condition. These symptoms can include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, difficulty speaking, nausea, and other anxiety-related symptoms. These physical reactions can themselves become an additional focus of fear, heightening the anxiety about potential disapproval or ridicule.

Social anxiety may also be accompanied by depression and/or other anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Some individuals suffering from social anxiety may self-medicate with drugs and/or alcohol to cope with their fears, which can lead to addiction.

Social anxiety, along with its associated issues, can be effectively treated. It is important to discuss these challenges with a psychologist, who can help you overcome your anxiety and enjoy life with significantly reduced stress.
