Anxiety, General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

People suffering from Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) often find themselves unable to control their concerns, even when they recognise that much of their anxiety is unwarranted. Individuals with GAD may also struggle to relax, experience sleep difficulties, and suffer from concentration deficits. They may also experience symptoms of depression.

Sufferers of GAD often experience a range of physical symptoms associated with chronic stress, including trembling, twitching, muscle tension, headaches, irritability, sweating, hot flashes, and feelings of lightheadedness or breathlessness.

When their anxiety levels are mild, people with GAD can function socially and maintain employment. Although they may not avoid specific situations due to their disorder, severe anxiety can make it difficult for individuals to carry out even the simplest daily activities.

GAD rarely occurs in isolation and is often accompanied by other anxiety disorders, depression, or substance abuse. It is commonly treated with medication and/or psychotherapy. However, any co-occurring conditions must also be addressed with the appropriate therapies.
