Symptoms of anxiety are fairly common as they closely relate to stress and are often associated with an upcoming event or a specific situation where someone feels uncomfortable. Feelings of anxiety can also arise following a stressful event, where a person may feel shaken or otherwise uneasy. Anxious feelings are often accompanied by physical sensations, such as a churning stomach, light-headedness, and a racing heart.
Chronic anxiety, however, is characterised by more severe and recurring or constant symptoms that can interfere with someone’s daily life, affecting work, school, relationships, and an individual’s physical and psychological health and wellbeing. This is commonly diagnosed as an Anxiety Disorder.
There are several different types of Anxiety Disorders, including:
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Specific phobia
- Panic Disorder
- Agoraphobia
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Social Anxiety Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
